Cabinet Refacing FAQs

What is cabinet refacing?

Cabinet refacing is a process of giving your existing kitchen or bathroom cabinets a new look by replacing the doors, drawer fronts, and hardware while leaving the cabinet box structure in place.

The process of refacing cabinets involves removing the old doors and drawer fronts and then applying new ¼ solid wood, veneer, or thermofoil to the cabinet frames and end panels.  New doors and drawer fronts are then installed, along with new hardware such as knobs and handles.

Cabinet refacing is less expensive than completely replacing your cabinets, and it can be done in less time with less disruption to your home. It is a great option for those who want to update the look of their kitchen or bathroom cabinets without the expense and hassle of a full remodel.

How long does cabinet refacing take?

The timeline for cabinet refacing can vary depending on the size of the kitchen or bathroom, the complexity of the project, and the contractor you hire. However, on average, cabinet refacing can take anywhere from 3 to 5 days. Cabinet refacing is a speedy alternative compared to a full kitchen renovation.

Although the chances of delays are much less with Cabinet Refacing than they are with complete kitchen remodels, It’s important to note that the timeline for cabinet refacing can be affected by any additional work that needs to be done, such as electrical or plumbing updates, delivery time for materials, or if any unexpected issues arise during the process.

One advantage of cabinet refacing is electrical and plumbing costs are much less because, in most cases, the basic footprint of the kitchen remains the same.

What is the cabinet refacing process?

The Home Improvements of Colorado cabinet refacing process consists of the following steps:

  1. Evaluation: The professionals at HIOC will evaluate the existing cabinets to determine if they are suitable for refacing. They will also discuss with you the design and materials you would like to use for the new doors, drawer fronts, and hardware.
  2. Removal: The old doors, drawer fronts, and hardware are removed from the cabinets. The cabinet boxes are cleaned and prepared for the ¼ inch solid wood, veneer, or laminate, depending on the job.
  3. ¼ Solid Wood, Veneer, or Laminate Application: The new ¼ inch solid wood (most of our projects utilize ¼ inch solid wood) veneer or laminate is applied to the cabinet boxes using a strong adhesive. The ¼ inch wood facing is attached with an adhesive and 23 gauge pin nails.
  4. Door and drawer front installation: The new doors and drawer fronts are installed using new soft-close hinges. The hardware, such as knobs and handles, is also installed.
  5. Finishing touches: Any necessary trim work is added, such as crown molding or toe kicks. The contractor will then inspect the work to ensure that everything is properly aligned and functioning correctly.
How much does cabinet refacing cost?

The cost of cabinet refacing can vary depending on a number of factors, such as the size of the kitchen or bathroom, the materials used, and the complexity of the project. However, on average, cabinet refacing can cost anywhere from $7,000 to $12,000. Cabinet refacing is a very affordable option to help give your kitchen a facelift without investing in a full remodel. Choosing cabinet refacing saves approximately 50%-60% compared to a full kitchen tear-out project.

Some of the factors that can affect the cost of cabinet refacing include:

  • The number of cabinets: The number of cabinets being refaced is one of the biggest factors impacting overall costs.
  • Size of the cabinets: Larger cabinets will require more materials and labor, which can increase the cost.
  • Type of materials: The cost of the materials used for refacing can vary depending on whether you choose ¼ inch solid wood, veneer, or laminate, as well as the quality of the materials.
